View full postFive Strategies to Eat Like a Farang and Spend Like a Thai
The five most important bargaining strategies I’ve learned so far:
1) Immediately frown and shake your head at the vendor’s initial price. Really get into the acting aspect of the entire exchange–it can be fun and most vendors have a good sense of humor about it.
2) By default, automatically counter-offer at 50% of the price they’re asking.
3) Keep the bargaining cheerful and friendly but make it clear you don’t mind walking away from the negotiation.
4) Use the words “Discount,” “Too expensive,” and “Bargain” liberally.
5) Try walking away if the vendor isn’t budging. They’ll often call you back with a lower price. If they don’t, check another vendor’s price or come back in a few minutes and try again.

The word “ravenous” usually implies hunger for food, but in this case it became quite clear that for Farangs, these Thai cab drivers had a different kind of hunger—the hunger which we know all too well in the world of Western Capitalism. The kind of hunger which only grows with each feeding. That is to say, money hunger.

Bibimbap is a delicious Korean food that literally means mixed meal because it is a mix of rice, vegetables, chili pepper paste and meat. I learned that the “mixing” is essential because when the woman sitting next to me on my flight to Korea saw my pathetic attempt at mixing it myself, she took the bowl from me and spent a good three minutes meticulously stirring the ingredients together. After she was done the bibimbap was much tastier.

A young girl, 18 maybe, steals glances at me from behind The American Pageant, and finally she tells me that her name is Emma. Well, that’s not my real name, she admits, chewing on her nails one at a time. I ask her how she can read about American History at five in the morning and she smiles, revealing an orange bottle of Adderal in her Coach purse. Emma wants to curate the Smithsonian, I learn. She’s going to Stanford in the fall. The other girls sprawl out on leather Laz-E-Boy’s while chain smoking and sipping diet coke. They each have stories, lives, and ambitions beyond undressing for truckers. Just another night at Pussycats.

This is more or less the answer I’ve been giving people. I’ll say “that’s easy,” and as you look into my eyes you might miss the betraying flash of emotions. I’ll say “I like to feel alive and fighting makes me feel alive,” and as I look at you I might recognize a familiar flash of confusion, disgust even. I’ll say “wanna see me light my hand on fire?” in an attempt to slap your mind into forgetting the exchange we just had long enough for me to avoid the inevitable follow up questions that harass me as I rest my head each night, yet cannot answer for myself, let alone for you. Then I might light my hand on fire, because I like doing things that sound like a bad idea, and my knuckles are kinda hairy anyways.

These people, my parents, had actually disagreed so often and so vehemently that my dad wouldn’t sign the dotted line on my birth certificate to give me a name, so they ended up not giving me a first name, which resulted in the hilarious mish-mash of last names, “Miller Williams.” I couldn’t help cracking a joke that would make them both squirm. This has been fun—maybe next time we can go to Disneyland together.

I also like to win. And dominate. So does that make me a spineless shark looking for a quick ego fix? Of course not, a shark without a spine is really just a jellyfish. It’s a legitimate question that not enough guys ask themselves, though. Each time I face someone I know is more technical than me I am scared but also excited. And I feel more down to earth, more humble afterwards. It teaches me that I am but a speck in this large universe—something that can be easy to forget at the height of male testosterone intoxication.
